Mongolia:
the horse king country, where snow covered mountains mingle with the desert. Green,
ochre and white….green like the vast sea of grass of the Steppes, ochre like
the sand dunes of the fabled Gobi desert and white like the traditional Gers.
Known as "the land of the blue sky", Mongolia is a remarkable,
sunny country enjoying 250 sunny days a year. The vast expanses of the Steppes,
the absolute magnitude, beauty and wonder of the Mongolian scenery are intertwined
with the Mongolian nomadic life style and renowned hospitality which has changed
little through the ages.
The endless and unspoilt expanses of the land provide
unique habitats for wildlife such as the snow leopard, the Gobi bear, the wild
camel, mountain sheep and wild ass.
A
country which appeals to visitors who enjoy remote, unspoilt places, the mountains
and deserts and the warmth of the people.
Starting
on the northern edge of the Gobi Desert, the route goes over the Khangai mountains,
and on to Karakorum, the place where Genghis Khan established the capital of the
great Mongol Empire in the thirteenth century. Our route takes us over high mountain
passes and through remote valleys in a country where the only inhabitants are
nomadic families with their herds of yaks and sheep. The local people are extremely
hospitable and passing travellers are invited into almost every Ger along the
way for a drink and some fresh cheese. The scenery is wild and beautiful and the
tracks a mountain bikers dream. There are opportunities to ride horses, yaks,
and possibly camels - as well as bikes. The road improves somewhat during the
last couple of days, finally reaching the small town of Karakorum in the Orkhon
valley where the magnificent Erdene Zuu monastery was established in the sixteenth
century as the centre of Buddhism in Mongolia.
This
tour covers one of the most beautiful parts of Mongolia, the mountains of Hovsgol
province near the northern border with Siberia. Beginning with a one and a half
hour internal flight from Ulaanbaatar, the biking then starts from the town of
Moron. The scenery is varied and remarkable with deep canyons, waterfalls, and
a background of snow-covered peaks. Apart from the majority Khalkh Mongols there
are also some families of the Darkhad ethnic group living in this area, and further
north the Tsaatan "reindeer" people. The route passes over the forested
Khoridol Saridag mountains (altitude approximately 3000 metres) and down to the
magnificent Hovsgol Lake. Our route follows the shore of this inland sea southwards
to the tiny port of Khatgal, then back to Moron.
